Not long after the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals threw out the White House’s appeal to reinstate the drilling ban that a lower court overturned, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar issued another deepwater drilling moratorium.
Salazar is making good on his promise to issue a new moratorium after the appeals court’s decision. The new moratorium will last until November 30th or until Salazar agrees that deepwater drilling can move forward safely.
The White House’s determination to enforce this ban despite the court ruling is overbearing and shortsighted. Businesses in the gulf as well as the appeals just all agree that the ban is not justified and unnecessary, but the White House is going to do it anyway.
Why did the White House file an appeal in the first place?
