Arizona: The Conservative Experiment

Arizona: The Conservative Experiment Image

Just as Detroit or Chicago or California has become the Petri dish for Liberalism, Arizona has become the experiment for law abiding Conservatism.  Both are pure examples of the consequences of each ideology.  Detroit, Chicago and California are liberal cesspools imploding from the inside out.  Arizona, on the other hand, is flourishing and proving that legislating common sense laws and enforcing them in a common sense way, always works.

Well, let me rephrase… it always works if you don’t have a large overreaching government, always hungry for more authority and power, blocking your attempts at self-preservation and protection.  This week we learned that federal judge, Susan Bolton, blocked part of the new Arizona law that was scheduled to go into full effect on Thursday.  The parts of the new bill that will be blocked from being enforced are:

• Requiring a police officer to make a reasonable attempt to check the immigration status of those they have stopped;

• Forbidding police from releasing anyone they have arrested until that person’s immigration status is determined;

• Making it a violation of Arizona law for anyone not a citizen to fail to carry documentation;

• Creating a new state crime for trying to secure work while not a legal resident;

• Allowing police to make warrantless arrests if there is a belief the person has committed an offense that allows them to be removed from the United States.

Governor Jan Brewer responded. “We will take a close look at every single element Judge (Susan) Bolton removed from the law, and we will soon file an expedited appeal at the United States Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit,” she said in a statement.

While I have a hard time wrapping my head around how we could have possibly gotten to this point as a nation where our own federal government is now suing one of it’s own states for protecting it’s borders, enough has been written and discussed about that.  Instead, I want to point out how incredibly well this new law has worked for Arizona, even before it’s gone into effect.  After several months of letting the news of the upcoming law settle in mentally, illegal immigrants are realizing that Arizona ain’t playin’.  In fact, over 100,000 illegals have already picked up and left the state.  If that doesn’t prove to be a comprehensive immigration reformation, than I don’t know what is!

Despite the loud minority constantly screaming and throwing their tantrums, statistics show that at least 80% of Americans fully side with Arizona on this issue.  The boycotts haven’t worked- in fact, they’ve backfired on the boycotters.  Patriotic, law abiding, freedom loving, and responsible Americans answered those boycotts with BUYcotts, urging everyone to give as much business to Arizona companies as possible.  And, new studies and reports out this week prove that the BUYcotts won and won big!  Hotel bookings across the state have gone up significantly- in some places have increased by more than 11% and while conventions may be down, Fox News reports this:

“Fundamentally, the boycotts have been unsuccessful,” said Barry Broome, president of the Greater Phoenix Economic Council.

The data from hotel industry research firm STR showed that for the state of Arizona, hotel occupancy was up 5.7 percent in May and up 8.3 percent in June compared with the same time a year ago.

In Phoenix, occupancy was up 10.6 percent in June; in Scottsdale, it was up 10.7 percent for the same period. Revenue also was up, with Arizona hotels raking in $148 million last month — up more than 11 percent from a year ago.

Broome said the state also has been able to attract new businesses to locate in Arizona despite bad publicity. He said his group plans to announce 2,000 to 3,000 new jobs thanks to investment from California, where Arizona boycotts are in place in several major cities, over the next few months.

“Business continues,” said Garrick Taylor, spokesman with the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

This is a national and intentional show of agreement from the rest of America and I imagine it won’t take long for the liberal boycotters to lose interest and find the next thing to picket.

Another noteworthy matter is that as parts of this bill moves into law there are many illegal immigrants who are voluntarily submitting to the legislation and should not have to be fearful about attempting to leave the state.  Americans For Legal Immigration PAC are calling on the Obama administration to allow for a smooth exit.  Fox News again reports:

“The peaceful and gradual exodus of illegals from Arizona shows there is no need for comprehensive immigration reform amnesty,” William Gheen, president of the group, said in a written statement. “Comprehensive immigration enforcement works and has the desired effect without mass deportations.”

Gheen said the safe passage would ensure that illegals “leave in an orderly fashion, instead of trying risky desert crossings, paying money to the cartels for passage south, or fleeing to other states.”

“This is about the only situation we would ever advocate that our immigration laws be waived,” Gheen said. “We want to encourage the illegals to leave America on their own and thus we ask Obama to provide them safe passage out of America.”

Our hope is that President Obama will take some time from his golf games, vacations and frolics on The View in order to form a positive response in agreement to this request.  You want a comprehensive immigration reform plan?  It’s been spelled out and tested for you and we already begin to see how well it works.  Allow the states to legislate and enforce their own immigration laws, assist them by allowing safe passage for the illegals obeying those laws to leave peacefully and without retribution, support the states as they enforce their own laws and then secure the border!  Arizona has been the Conservative Experiment and it’s working!

    Excellent article. The only concern I have is that the 100,000 illegals that have left Arizona, are probably heading to Texas, and we already have enought illegals!!!

    This is straight out of the Founders' intentions – have 13 (or 50) independent laboratories where you can try policies that best fit your state, with all those possible solutions on the table for other states to learn from. If we don't see Arizona prevail, a lot more "one-size-fits-all" policies will become impossible to reverse.

    Looks like that boycott and all those marches aren't breaking any hearts are they? Keep shoving that flag of Mexico in our face, I'm sure we'll all come to understand your side soon…
