It is the fourth quarter and the Democrats are down by a lot! They know they cannot win, but their coach is vigorously trying to prevent an embarrassing defeat on November 2nd. He blames Republicans, Fox News, John Boehner, Sean Hannity, angry people attending town halls who cling to their guns and religion, and anyone else in sight hoping that something will stick so they can catch a breath and slow down the momentum mounting against them. Like his policies, his attacks on his opposition have also failed. I guess you can’t blame a man for trying. With that in mind, why would they not sling some filthy mud at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce less than three weeks before election day and see if that rattles the cage of their most loyal supporters.
This story starts with ThinkProgress, a far left group that is ran by the George Soros’s funded progressive organization the Center for American Progress. According to ThinkProgress, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce collected over $200,000 in dues from foreign companies and kept those funds in the its general fund. Given the enormous amount of contributions the Chamber has handed out during this election cycle that has helped candidates running against well established Democrats, ThinkProgress is charging that the Chamber may be using foreign funds to pay for the ads. As you are probably aware, it is illegal for foreign donations to be used in American elections. If ThinkProgress’s claims are correct the Chamber would be in quite a bit of trouble, but why should they provide evidence to prove their case when they have powerful friends in Washington who will run with the story on accusation alone?
President Obama was more than eager to take ThinkProgress’s allegations to the campaign trail. While he was at a campaign rally in Philadelphia attempting to energize supporters, he yet again jumped to a conclusion without knowing all of the facts. Obama claimed that foreign companies could be funding attack ads against Democrat candidates like Patrick Murphy and Joe Sestak. Vice President Joe Biden seconded Obama’s remarks in Scranton, Pennsylvania stating, “I challenge the Chamber of Commerce to tell us how much of the money they’re investing is from foreign sources. I challenge them. If I’m wrong, I will stand corrected.”
Like everything else in the political fog, things aren’t how they seem. Obama, Biden and their liberal friends at ThinkProgress will have you believe they are looking out for you by keeping evil corporations, or in this case foreign companies, out of the election cycle to prevent them from stealing elections. However, when the unions and progressive high rollers pump millions of dollars into liberal organizations such as the Center for American Progress, ThinkProgress, MoveOn.org, the ACLU, and dozens of other progressive, socialist friendly groups to help Democrats stay in power they have no problem with it.
The Chamber has planned to spend about $75 million during this election cycle, but liberal groups are not exactly short on cash either. The ACLU has raised a recording breaking $407 million in its last fundraising drive. The Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday that Democrats have actually outspent Republicans in the last 60 days, $47.3 million to $40.8 million. Have Obama, Biden and their liberal friends called for the investigation of those organizations? No, and do not expect it. The WSJ let Senator Al Franken explain why:
Even Mr. Franken admits in his letter that the Chamber’s commingling of funds in its general accounts is not “per se illegal,” but apparently he thinks it’s fine to unleash federal investigators because the Chamber cash might contribute to the defeat of fellow Democrats.
Does it make sense now? Democrats are unleashing their hounds to protect their own skin. This is self-preservation of big government at its best.
Obama is not the only one offensively defending the Democrat fortress. Max Baucus is taking care of other Democrat foes. His targets are 501(c) groups that allegedly violated rules by engaging in too much political activity, whatever that means. His weapon of choice: the IRS!
The WSJ detailed Baucus’s efforts to send out the IRS attack dogs on groups including Americans for Job Security and American Crossroads. After a nudge by liberal organizations Democracy 21 and Campaign Legal Center, Baucus prompted the IRS to investigate the political spending of American Crossroads:
Chairman Max Baucus of the powerful Senate Finance Committee got the threats going last month when he asked Internal Revenue Service Commissioner Douglas Shulman to investigate if certain tax exempt 501(c) groups had violated the law by engaging in too much political campaign activity. Lest there be any confusion about his targets, the Montana Democrat flagged articles focused on GOP-leaning groups, including Americans for Job Security and American Crossroads.
Mr. Baucus was seconded last week by the ostensibly nonpartisan campaign reform groups Democracy 21 and the Campaign Legal Center, which asked the IRS to investigate whether Crossroads is spending too much money on campaigns. Those two outfits swallowed their referee whistle in the last two campaign cycles, but they’re all worked up now that Republicans might win more seats. Crossroads GPS, a 501(c)(4) affiliate of American Crossroads supported by Karl Rove, is a target because it has spent millions already in this election cycle.
Going back to the Chamber, what do they say in their defense about the allegations? Bruce Josten, the Chamber’s Vice President of Government Affairs explained to Fox News’s Megyn Kelly that the agenda here is clearly to expose the names of their donors in order to give their hounds more red meat to chew on.
Brit Hume added to the commentary, citing a New York Times column that states that no evidence has been brought forth to prove the allegation against the Chamber. Furthermore, Hume pointed out that Obama’s decision to run with the baseless claim proves the point that they are merely trying to prevent a “massacre” in November by getting their liberal base riled up.
Almost humorously, the big conspiracy ThinkProgress tags to the Chamber’s foreign funds allegation is that they are purposefully moving jobs overseas. Let that sink in for a moment. They are accusing an organization that is made up of mostly small businesses of committing a crime in an effort to steal the election from Democrats so that they can continue to send jobs overseas. If I may throw a few questions out there to anyone who is or has ever ran a business: Which party is it that is consistently seeking to raise your taxes? Which party is always pushing for more bureaucratic red tag regulation? Which party is capping industries by means of moratoriums, environmental concerns, and public health risks? Which party is backed by union thug organizations that are actively building global unions and proudly claim “workers of the world unite?” Which party is consistently limiting the free market and hurting businesses in America? Which party is primarily the one responsible for driving jobs overseas? You know the answer to those questions. It is the Democrats!
The timing of these charges against the Chamber and the unleashing of government agencies like the IRS to go after organizations that are hurting the Democrat is no coincidence. This entire story is nothing more than liberal leaders exercising a planned 2 minute drill before the polls open. It is an abuse of power and every office holder with an ounce of integrity, Democrat or Republican, should call for it to cease immediately. The American people certainly will not stand for it!
