I found the whole thing disappointing this go around. I always enjoy the SOTU, even when it is delivered by a President that I found wholly unsuitable to serve, obnoxiously hypocritical and insubstantial as I find our current one. I enjoy the entire politics of it- and eagerly anticipate the “You lie!” moments or the Samuel Alito “head shake” shots that make instant world news.
I have always loved looking at the Republicans seated on one side and the Democrats seated on the others. The blatant disgust of one side when the President of the opposite party drives a point home that they find particularly repugnant delights me- while the other side jumps to their feet with applause and hoots, all while shooting smug, snotty looks of glee to the other side. I know many of you might me weird- but such is the life of most political junkies such as myself.
That being said…this State of the Union was about as exciting as watching paint dry. Not only did we have to listen to the hypocritical rhetoric of a President intent on bankrupting his country, with more and more spending ideas all couched in soft phrases like “invest,” we didn’t even get to watch our teams go at it on the field!
Why the Republicans would bow to an idea from a Democrat who, now that they’ve lost their majority, all of a sudden have a deep and abiding desire for unity and bipartisanship is completely beyond me. Seeing all of the Republicans seated with their date-night counterparts of the dark side seemed so silly and amateurish and leaves one wondering what happened after the dinner and the movie.
Moving on to the message…Obama clearly doesn’t get it. Americans don’t just want a “spending freeze”- they want drastic spending CUTS! Imagine your family’s personal finances. If you were hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt personally- in danger of failing to even make your minimum interest payments putting you in a financial emergency, what would be the common sense thing to do? Just freeze additional spending for a bit? Or…would you pull out the family budget and begin immediately cutting all of the spending that wasn’t necessary for the survival of your family? Gone are the pedicures for awhile…gone are the hair highlights…time to turn off the cable for a bit…sale the Mercedes and take the bus to work…sell the big house and downsize into something more affordable…the list goes on and on but you get my drift.
2011 already represents the largest deficit in our nation’s history. From the AP:
A new estimate predicts the federal budget deficit will hit almost $1.5 trillion this year, a stunning new record.
The latest figures from the Congressional Budget Office are up from previous estimates because Congress and President Barack Obama teamed up in December on bipartisan legislation to extend Bush-era tax cuts that were due to expire. The new estimates will only add fuel to a raging debate over cutting spending and looming legislation that’s required to allow the government to borrow more money.
Enough of the kissey-face between the Democrats and Republicans. We are in a dire fiscal emergency. The voters did not slam the voting booths in November to send you to Washington to hold hands and skip down the aisles with your Democrat counterparts. Do your job. Cut the spending. Grow and maintain the strength of the Congressional Republican spinal chord and you will have our undying support. Fail to do so… and we will send you home just like we did many of your friends this last November! Just get ‘er done!
