Texas Considers Allowing Concealed Carry On College Campuses

Ever since the tragic shooting at Virginia Tech in 2007 conservative lawmakers and gun rights activists have pushed to permit those with a concealed handgun license (CHL) to carry on college campuses.

Currently, CHL holders are restricted from carrying on school grounds.  But that could all change soon. From Breitbart:

More than half the members of the Texas House have signed on as co-authors of a measure directing universities to allow concealed handguns. The Senate passed a similar bill in 2009 and is expected to do so again. Republican Gov. Rick Perry, who sometimes packs a pistol when he jogs, has said he’s in favor of the idea.

For gun rights activists the logic to allow carrying on college campuses is simple.  You have a right to defend yourself at all times.  “Gun-free zones” have been turned into mass murder scenes by twisted people.  Therefore, allow law abiding citizens that are already licensed by the state to carry elsewhere the right to carry on campus.  If student and faculty CHL holders are able to defend themselves on campus then a would-be mass murderer could be stopped before they take the lives of numerous people.

This effort been attempted before in Texas without much success, but with larger Republican majorities it could end up passing this time.  And Texas is not the only state fighting for this cause.
