Obama’s War: Secretly Authorizes Support For Libyan Rebels

Reports are coming out indicating that President Obama signed a secret executive order authorizing covert support for Libyan rebel fighters to get rid of Muammar Gaddafi.

From Reuters:

President Barack Obama has signed a secret order authorizing covert U.S. government support for rebel forces seeking to oust Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, government officials told Reuters on Wednesday.

Obama signed the order, known as a presidential “finding”, within the last two or three weeks, according to government sources familiar with the matter.

Such findings are a principal form of presidential directive used to authorize secret operations by the Central Intelligence Agency. This is a necessary legal step before such action can take place but does not mean that it will.

The CIA and the White House declined immediate comment.

What does this mean?  Nobody knows exactly.  However to provide arms to the rebel fighters opens up a whole new can of worms.  That action would likely include some boots on the ground for both logistical or operational reasons which violates a firm pledge Obama made about ruling out ground troops as an option.  Also that action would violate the arms embargo against Libya, although the government officials are suggesting there are loopholes around it.  The most importantly in my opinion you have to consider that we could very well be arming our enemy – al Qaeda.  On top of all that there is the fact that the American people neither want nor can afford a third military engagement in the Middle East.

In hindsight, how accurate was Michele Bachmann’s remark, “this is President Obama’s War:”
