Liberals attacking liberals.
Big labor AFL-CIO boss Richard Trumka sent Democrats an ultimatum. They can either help unions or unions will drop their support of Democrats. Ya right!
From The DC:
AFL-CIO union boss Richard Trumka issued a threat to Democrats nationwide at the National Press Club on Friday, calling on them to support his and other unions or face losing their support.
“We will spend the summer holding elected leaders in Congress as well as the states accountable on one measure: Are they improving or degrading life for working families? We are looking hard at how we work in the nation’s political arena,” Trumka said, according to prepared remarks. “We have listened hard, and what workers want is an independent labor movement that builds the power of working people – in the workplace and in political life.”
Trumka went even further than just saying he’ll hold elected leaders accountable. He said Democrats may be “controlling the wrecking ball” that’s crippling unions, too, and that he plans to stand up to either party.
“It doesn’t matter if candidates and parties are controlling the wrecking ball or simply standing aside – the outcome is the same either way,” Trumka said. “If leaders aren’t blocking the wrecking ball and advancing working families’ interests, working people will not support them. This is where our focus will be – now, in 2012 and beyond.”
This pledge by Trumka comes in the midst of Boeing’s project relocation from Washington state to South Carolina, a right-to-work state, over labor disputes. Unions have filed a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board to prevent Boeing from relocating the project – or in other words force Boeing to give the jobs to union workers in Seattle, WA. It is an Atlas Shrugged moment!
I do not doubt the passion Trumka has in his message to Democrats. If push came to shove, something we all know unions are not afraid of, Trumka will probably make good on his promise to denounce support for Democrats that aren’t willing to play his game. Any actions by Trumka and his union minions can only come in the form of a primary challenge though. It’s been threatened before by the hard-on-the-eyes socialist Michael Moore:
“To the Democrats in Congress who don’t quite get it: I want to offer a personal pledge. I – and a lot of other people – have every intention of removing you from Congress in the next election if you stand in the way of health care legislation that the people want,” Moore told supporters of women’s groups and unions gathered at the headquarters of the government watchdog group Public Citizen. “That is not a hollow or idle threat. We will come to your district and we will work against you, first in the primary and, if we have to, in the general election.”
Trumka must be feeling the heat from this conservative movement. While he may very well take to his word and go after some Democrats, at the end of the day do not expect him to completely withdraw support during a general election. Weakening some incumbent Democrats might actually turn out to be a political advantage for Republicans too – particularly Democrat Senators. Unions may be very well organized, but the passion within this new conservative moment is principled at its core. Bullies like Trumka may come and go, but fundamental conservative principles are here to stay!
