It was a difficult evening for me. I’ve just returned home from what was an inspiring and positive week in Tampa at the RNC and found my mood spiraling down and my blood pressure shooting up after a few hours of listening to speaker after speaker on the first night of the Democratic National Convention. And, it reaffirmed that if that is the best they’ve got- America is in a lot of trouble.
Listening to the shrill screams from the women on the platform, directed to the women in the audience (many wearing Sluts Vote pins) about their rights to abort their babies (all while trying to avoid using the word “abortion”) was enough to make my skin crawl after awhile. Their valiant effort at repeating the party line that the GOP is waging a war on women doesn’t seem to be working as polls are showing that Obama’s approval ratings among women are dropping.
The decline has occurred entirely among women registered voters – from 57-39 percent favorable-unfavorable in April to a numerically negative 46-50 percent now. That’s Obama’s lowest score among women voters – a focus of recent political positioning – in ABC/Post polls since he took office.
See, what they don’t understand is that while women absolutely have an interest in their contraception and birth control, they also know that the GOP has no interest in taking that away- no matter how often they trot out Sandra Fluke’s tired speeches.
However, women all over this country are in positions that they have never been in before. Many, for the first time, are taking over the mantle of breadwinner because their husbands have lost their jobs. On the way to work they are stopping for gas and realizing that they only have enough to cover half a tank because they also have to stop on the way home and pick up a packet of diapers and milk. Many more are using food stamps for the first time in their lives and realizing that the hope and change that they voted for aren’t translating into their every day existence. It’s great on a hallmark card but hard to live off of.
My question to the DNC is this…If you feel that abortion is such a driving and popular issue among women right now, why didn’t you reserve that for your primetime slot?
That being said, listening to the non-ending abortion rhetoric is insulting for those women among us in those positions and for those of us who have family and friends we are watching struggle. We want to know why Obama, if he has all of the answers, hasn’t already done something about the $16 trillion debt, the 47 million on food stamps, and the soaring and devastating unemployment problem in this country?
This DNC has set the tone for exactly what I figured it would be. A lot of tricks with the left hand to keep us distracted from what is happening in the other hand. A week of cheerleading for big government/socialistic ideas, with nary a mention for individual liberty, responsibility, freedom and success. Just an invitation for more Americans to belly up to the pig and live off the government teat and avoiding the REAL question…are you better off now than you were four years ago?
