Sometimes I will wake up in the middle of the night after having been asleep for several hours with a thought that is plastered to my brain. It wrestles and fights with my sub conscience and I know I will lay awake talking to myself until I reach I over to my nightstand and start typing out my thoughts on my phone. Until I get it off my brain and onto a digital form for the morning I know I won’t be released to the glories of sweet slumber again. Many night in the past years have been spent in the dark, laying on my side typing away on my iPhone to be sent to myself for review in the morning. This was one of those thoughts and I can only hope it is because it’s meant for someone somewhere.
If you follow me at all, you know that abortion is a hot topic for me. I can argue politics all day long and walk away with a smile and a handshake at the end. But, abortion is the only topic that I find difficult to do that with because, in my opinion, abortion isn’t a political issue. Abortion a human rights issue. The slaughter of the unborn is purely about the most basic of form human decency and that far transcends politics.
However, I’m beginning to notice a trend has to be addressed -and in something broader than a 140 characters. Progressives have developed a talking point that are blatant lies and we need to be better at speaking up and refuting the nonsense. Their talking points usually include something that they want the public to believe about Conservatives that are somehow worse than the bad behavior they are trying to justify. It’s an Alinsky style tactic. Freeze the opponent and distract from the original argument by ridiculing and exaggerating your opponent’s position. This Alinsky style tactic easily fits within several of the 12 Rules For Radicals.
Example in point… When standing for life and arguing that every life holds value a Progressive will dismiss that notion by attempting to convince us that Conservatives only care about life within the womb and “don’t want to financially help” the baby once it’s been born. Therefore, they feel that they are completely justified in their support of slaughter and instead of continuing to debate the value of life, the conversation becomes about something else entirely.
This must be addressed as the lie that it is…based on a gross manipulation of conservative principles and absolutely no real life truth.
First, let us be clear. Conservatives do not believe in cradle to the grave government assistance. This is the truth that liberals exploit to justify our own American holocaust. We do encourage individual responsibility. We do believe in equal justice– not social justice. Our philosophy is that a large welfare state cripples a person’s incentives to ever better themselves. We know from history that once people vote themselves into entitlements, they never vote themselves out of them. Progressives believe that people are inherently powerless, incapable of solving their own problems and that a lifetime of government welfare exchanged for an individual’s freedom and motivation is a positive thing.
Liberals live a life of bumper stickers… “Better a Bleeding Heart Than None at All”… but with no real life application. Because they are all for help, as long as they aren’t directly and financially responsible. They are huge believers in giving- they just believe in giving from YOUR pocket. Case in point from Real Clear Politics:
— Although liberal families’ incomes average 6 percent higher than those of conservative families, conservative-headed households give, on average, 30 percent more to charity than the average liberal-headed household ($1,600 per year vs. $1,227).
— Conservatives also donate more time and give more blood.
— Residents of the states that voted for John Kerry in 2004 gave smaller percentages of their incomes to charity than did residents of states that voted for George Bush.
— Bush carried 24 of the 25 states where charitable giving was above average.
— In the 10 reddest states, in which Bush got more than 60 percent majorities, the average percentage of personal income donated to charity was 3.5. Residents of the bluest states, which gave Bush less than 40 percent, donated just 1.9 percent.
— People who reject the idea that “government has a responsibility to reduce income inequality” give an average of four times more than people who accept that proposition.
Now that it’s been established who the REAL givers in America are let’s circle back to the topic of abortion and pregnant girls-specifically teen girls who find themselves in a terrifying situation. I don’t believe that anybody wants to promote teen pregnancy- except perhaps Planned Parenthood- since their multi-millions upon million of dollars are generally raked in on the backs of young girls who have been taught by sex education in our schools not to put a tremendous value upon their bodies. They aren’t taught that they are priceless, that their bodies and their sexuality shouldn’t be given away to the nearest pimply faced young boy who begs or pressures them for it. The loose attitudes we have towards sex in this hyper-sexualized society is just teaching our kids that if you are going to have sex, just wear a condom. We put emphasis on protecting their bodies but we are failing their spirits, their emotions and their hearts. And more than promoting “safe sex” most of these programs are just promoting “more sex.”
How do I know? Pregnancies and abortions are only rising among our girls with one in every three babies being born out of wedlock and STD’s are rising to epic proportions with over 3 Million kids infected.
We must change the conversation. But as importantly, what do we do with these girls who have made a terrible decision that results in a pregnancy? We certainly don’t celebrate the decisions but we must rally around the girls (and boys) and the families involved. Because contrary to the liberal lie that conservatives want to abandon these girls to fend for themselves “after they choose life,” it hasbeen conservatives who have set up an amazing support system of Crisis Pregnancy Centers all over our country. This is a prime example of compassionate conservatism in action. One that displays assistance on behalf of people who care and are willing to get down on a servant’s level, eyeball to eyeball with these girls, and teach them that a baby doesn’t have to be a “punishment” as our President so revoltingly preaches.
These centers provide confidential counseling, free medical care (often includes ultrasounds), adoption counseling (if that is the route they choose), housing assistance, job placements, parenting classes, and baby items. These centers are financially funded and worked by people who believe so much in the value of life that they are willing to put their time, their money and their resources into it and they do it successfully without the government. This is the system by which our Founding Fathers based charity. Charity doesn’t come from the government, it comes from the people.
We must engage these girls…put our arms around them and teach them that a hand up is sometimes necessary to ask for, but we must also empower them to become productive members of society. True conservatism preaches life in every circumstance but contrary to liberal lies, it doesn’t stop there. It empowers, it engages, it raises up young men and women who find themselves in difficult and less than ideal situations and turns them into champions and leaders for future generations.
This is the conservative truth. We do stand for life. We do not abandon legitimate needs. We believe that there is a redeeming hope that can be created out of a bad situation and that sending a young girl in for an abortion doesn’t solve a problem…it puts a temporary band-aid over a newly created amputation that leads to years of grief and sorrow. We believe that there are long term solutions that doesn’t leave one dead and another wounded for the rest of her life and we believe that Champions can be birthed from adversity. This is true compassionate conservatism….not a fake bleeding liberal heart.
