Houston Mayor Annise Parker Is a Bully, Demands Pastoral Sermons Be Inspected For Anti-Gay Content

I’ll be the first to admit that when I first saw this come through my social media feeds, I rolled my eyes and thought “gullible people will believe anything.”  As much as I absolutely loathe Houston Mayor, Annise Parker, I thought that even this would be too much for me to believe as a credible story.  You can imagine my horror when I watched it continue and this time stem -not from The Onion- but from very credible news sources.  From Fox News:

The city of Houston has issued subpoenas demanding a group of pastors turn over any sermons dealing with homosexuality, gender identity or Annise Parker, the city’s first openly lesbian mayor. And those ministers who fail to comply could be held in contempt of court.

Mayor Annise Parker has been at war with the people of faith who reside in Houston ever since she took office.   The battle brew to a boiling point over a bathroom bill that would have allowed transgendered people to choose whichever restrooms that they preferred.

“It shall be unlawful for any place of public accommodation or any employee or agent thereof to intentionally deny any person entry to any restroom, shower room, or similar facility if that facility is consistent with and appropriate to that person’s expression of gender identity,” the ordinance states.

Meaning, if you are a man who “feels” like a woman- feel free to use the ladies room.  Also meaning, if you are a male child molester in need of a victim, you can also easily pretend to be transgendered as a free pass for a lookie-loo or an opportunity to molest or rape a woman or child in the women’s bathroom.

An enormous protests, led by Houston area leaders and Pastors (of every denomination, race, and creed) joined efforts like never seen before to fight the Houston City Council and Mayor Annise Parker on the passing of this outrageously dangerous bill in an attempt to protect Houston women and children from the inevitable harm, that anyone with a lick of sense could plainly see, from happening.  Area leaders, churches, pastors and various groups concerned for the welfare of Houston children put up a colossal fight to defeat this terrible bill.  However, they were shut out of meetings, not allowed to speak, and shenanigans of all sorts took place.  Despite the massive unpopularity for the bill, the Houston City Council passed it anyways in June of 2014.

Yet, it’s clear that Mayor Parker is now intending to take her revenge by demanding something that she has no claim.

Mayor Parker will not explain why she wants to inspect the sermons. I contacted City Hall for a comment and received a terse reply from the mayor’s director of communications.

“We don’t comment on litigation,” said Janice Evans.

However, ADF attorney Stanley suspects the mayor wants to publicly shame the ministers. He said he anticipates they will hold up their sermons for public scrutiny. In other words – the city is rummaging for evidence to “out” the pastors as anti-gay bigots.

Among those slapped with a subpoena is Steve Riggle, the senior pastor of Grace Community Church. He was ordered to produce all speeches and sermons related to Mayor Annise Parker, homosexuality and gender identity.

The mega-church pastor was also ordered to hand over “all communications with members of your congregation” regarding the non-discrimination law.

“This is an attempt to chill pastors from speaking to the cultural issues of the day,” Riggle told me. “The mayor would like to silence our voice. She’s a bully.”

Progressives have turned everything that they don’t agree with into “hate speech.”  They prefer to win, not through debates or votes…but through eliminating the opposition.  Strip the opposing voice of their First Amendment, along with their Freedom of Religion.  And for the party who constantly screams about the “separation of church and state”- for once it applies, as it was never intended to keep the church out of the government but the government out of the Church.

Most importantly, instances like this only serve to remind me that Christians have become the pathetically shameful silent majority.  If we were active as we should be in our government, blatant and gross infringes like this on our religious liberties would never stand a chance.  Modern day politics have given me a front row seat to a block of people who are quite active in regards to their opinions but utterly worthless when it matters: Christians.

The Christian voting block has gotten great at sitting at home and griping about the turn of events and the fact that our religious liberties are being stolen.  But where are these people when it’s time to show up and vote?  Stats showed that during our last primary season here in Texas, only 8.9% of my county showed up to pull a lever on their candidates.  I find that appalling.  I live in Texas, the Bible belt.  My county would be considered largely affluent, very diverse, but very conservative.  And yet, they STAYED HOME!  More appalling and disheartening is the fact that out of those 50%, only 50% of THOSE registered, even ever make it to the voting booths!  Why are Christians some of the leading groups sitting out and failing to do their duties as Americans and getting out to vote their values?

And for my friends who profess to be Believers and vote Democrat because it’s habitual among your race or your culture, I hope this is your wake up call.  This is what happens when you allow Progressives to take over your cities.  Look beyond what your peers do, examine your choices, hold those you vote for against the mirror of what your faith teaches you and ask yourself if they are consistent with each other.

Houstonians, wake up and take your stand loud and proud against the persecution of our area Pastors.  Inform Mayor Annise Parker she has no business dictating what your Pastors can and cannot say– and if she wants to hear the contents of a sermon she can attend your 11 AM Sunday service!
