I remember the good ol’ days when our party was simply worried about losing the Hispanic vote….perhaps 13% of the voting population. And now, as Republicans try to create outraged offense from a Hillary staffer towards Catholics via Wikileaks, Trump (not a staffer) has systematically destroyed every demographic from Hispanic, to blacks, to Jews, to the handicapped, to women. And none more so than women.
I have often been on the frontlines on the offense against the notion that Republicans are involved in a war on women. It was a faux war and it was easy to debunk. I’ve proudly been opposite of the party of Bill Clinton, Anthony Weiner, Spitzer, and Filner. We had lechers too—but when they surfaced, we historically kicked them out and took the responsibility on of keeping our own house clean.
Democrats, on the other hand protected their scoundrels. The Democrat party leadership bunkered down and refused to address the heinous acts perpetuated by these men and even Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the most powerful woman in Congress, never called for either Weiner or Spitzer to step down from their races- nor did she ever publicly denounce Bill Clinton, As a woman, I found that to be grossly offensive and hypocritical and I took pride and pleasure in not sharing a party with such weak willed women who put party business over human decency.
Now, in the grand election of 2016, we have Donald Trump. A man who can only rival Bill Clinton in his offenses towards women.
And now our male leadership is as brutally guilty as the Democrat party has ever been in protecting their lecher. This has moved well beyond Trump. We know what a gross piece of humanity that he is. Misogyny and disrespect for women has been a theme that has run heavy through his campaign. We know he feels intimidated by strong women to the point that he loses all self control and stays up all night bashing them in tweets.
But now, in his own words, we’ve heard him describe in great detail exactly how he gets away with it. In fact, his braggadocios hot mic details almost exactly Jill Harth’s 1997 lawsuit against him.
But it won’t be just Trump that drives me from this party. I’m disgusted with the male leaders of the Republican party. They may not be sexual predators; they may not be sexist or misogynist- but they are clearly okay with others in our party who are.
Every man in our party who even tepidly endorsed his candidacy and promised to support him was shown an opened back door with which to save their dignity by this egregious revelation and almost all of them stayed; proving they have no real values, no real principles, no real decency—but even in their weak and neutered state, still think they have some chance of winning?
These men had a defining moment and instead became gutless wonders who issued simpering statements—going up to the line and then refusing to cross it.
They have decimated this party of so many strong conservative female voices who will refuse to ever lend their support again. I, for one, am done. I can never fight for a party who finds this level of degeneracy acceptable. There are no redeeming qualities left for me to ever defend. I can never, in good conscience, shield the kind of men who protects a deviant of this sort, all for the sake of some meaningless win.
What do we have left to stand for? What moral fortitude can you ever claim moving forward? Our party has nothing left if we accept this as status quo. This is the kind of moral relativism that makes an epic mockery of your previous values. You’ve literally sold your souls to “stand by your scum,” making you no different than those whom you oppose.
This ship needs to sink and burn and every spineless man in the party who went along with this, even halfheartedly, needs to go down with it. And, I can assure you, I am simply one of legions who will remember the names.
